Correspondence to Peter Maughan and to his wife, Mary Ann Weston Maughan, tickets, certificates, and miscellaneous personal papers of the Maughans. Most significant correspondent is Brigham Young. Also includes Mary Ann Weston Maughan's midwife record (1853-1892), rules and regulations for pupils in the Brigham Young College (Logan, Utah), record of the city lots in Tooele, Utah (June 1853), Wilford Woodruf circular to the female Relief Societies (August 1877), and the prospectus for the Woman's Exponent.

Biographical Note

Peter Maughan was a prominent member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Tooele, Utah and Cache Valley (Utah and Idaho), and he was a member of the state legislature.

Content Description

Peter Maughan's papers contain mostly personal items. Maughan's declaration of intention to become a United States citizen is the first item in the collection. Other items in the collection include a certificate of appointment as a notary public of Tooele County, Maughan's commission as captain of battalion of infantry of the Tooele Military District, and certificates of election to the House of Representatives and as probate judge of Cache County, Utah. Maughan's correspondence with Brigham Young and other Church authorities is also included. Maughan's wife, Mary Ann Weston Maughan, has her correspondence and other personal items contained in this collection. The rest of the collection consists of invitations to various events attended by the Maughans and miscellaneous items.

The materials in this collection are useful to anyone interested in early Utah history or early history of the Church. Persons interested in the life of Peter Maughan will also find this collection very useful. This collection contains materials dating from 1838-1941.

This collection has been arranged by topics. The certificates and legal records are first, then Maughan's and his wife's correspondence, then the invitations and other assorted items.
