Historical Note
Born on July 21, 1898, in Mapleton, Utah County, Utah, George Dewey Clyde graduated from Utah State Agricultural College in 1922. As an agricultural engineer, he served on the staff of both the Experiment Station and the College, becoming a full professor in 1928. He served as Dean of the School of Engineering from 1936 through 1945. Following World War II, Mr. Clyde left the employ of the College to assume the duties of Chief of the Division of Irrigation Engineering and Water Conservation for the Soil Conservation Service, Research Branch under the United States Department of Agriculture. He was also a director of the Utah Water and Power Board. He played an important role in the approval of the Upper Colorado River Basin Storage Project in 1956. A long standing member of the Utah Republican Party, he left Civil Service and ran successfully for the governorship of Utah that same year, serving eight years.
