Historical Note

Newton, Utah was founded in 1869 by settlers seeking better agricultural lands, perennial access to water, and a location that was situated closer to other settlements in Cache Valley. The settlement of Newton also came as a result of the migration of settlers from Clarkston, Idaho who relocated to Newton because the winter weather in Clarkston made winter travel nearly impossible. During 1869 and 1870, many of Clarkston's residents moved to Newton and began to construct a settlement. Over the next few decades, these and other settlers constructed homes, a rock church, irrigation canals, a reservoir, roads, bridges, and other projects that solidified the town's location and allowed its agricultural economy to progress.
