Historical Note

The Utah-Idaho Central Railroad Company grew from two local railway systems organized by David Eccles. The Ogden Rapid Transit Company (1900) and the Logan Rapid Transit Company (1909) merged in May 1914 to create the Ogden, Logan & Idaho Railway Company. The main line extended from Ogden, Utah to Preston, Idaho and its major business focus was to profit from passenger (rather than freight) transit. The company was officially incorporated with the name "Utah-Idaho Central Railroad" in 1918. The Utah-Idaho Central operated until February 28, 1947, when the rail line was abandoned and scrapped.

The station in Providence, Utah was erected in 1915 and by 1916 had become a stop on the electric-powered Ogden, Logan & Idaho Railway Company's route.

Content Description

This three-box collection contains the papers of the UIC Providence Railroad Station and spans the period of 1918 to 1919. These papers consist of freight tariff publications from the United States Railroad Administration, daily abstracts and balance sheets, way bills, and a memorandum for cashbook. Box 1 contains the United States Railway Administration circulars which concern freight tariffs that are geographically specific and contain detailed charges for different types of freight, such as cement, livestock, and canned goods. Boxes 2-3 contain a variety of working papers from the station, including bills of landing, daily abstracts, daily balance sheets, way bills, and, memorandum for cashbook.

The papers that comprise this collection were found in an abandoned building in Logan and had received water damage prior to their donation to Utah State University. Researchers should be aware that the papers in this collection are fragile and at times difficult to read due to this damage.
