Overview of the Collection
Historical NoteBeginning in the mid-1970s, citizen groups, such as the League of Women Voters and the Cache County Mayors Association, began to investigate ways to modernize the structure of Cache County's government. They complained that the size of the three-member commission was too small, resulting in inadequate representation for the county's citizens and insufficient separation of powers. A seven-member legislative council, these groups argued, would be cheaper, more democratic, and more in accordance with the intent of the Utah state legislature. The measure was put to a vote of the citizens in November 1984, where it passed 59% (14,726) to 41% (10,061). The new form of government officially took effect on January 5, 1987. Content DescriptionThis collection contains papers documenting the campaign by the League of Women Voters and the Cache County Mayors Association to change the county government from a three-member commission to seven-member legislative council. Included are proposals, campaign and research materials, letters, notes, and newspaper clippings. Use of the Collection
