Overview of the Collection
Biographical NoteJoseph Jeppe (J.J.) Larsen (1873-1967) was born in Newton, Utah, the son of Christian Hansen and Marianne Larsen. In 1895 Larsen enrolled at the Agricultural College of Utah (now Utah State University) to study dairy husbandry and graduated in 1897. Larsen was employed as a teacher at a number of schools in Utah from 1898 to 1903. Larsen married Lettie Christensen in 1900. In 1903 Larsen returned to Newton and worked as a teacher and farmer; in 1907 he quit teaching and pursued farming full time. He was highly involved in local agriculture and irrigation. He served as president of the Newton Town Board, held various positions with the Newton Irrigation Company, was involved in the Newton Grain Growers Association, served as directory of the Farmers Grain Cooperative, and was involved with repair work done on Newton Dam during 1937 and 1945. Larsen continued farming in Newton until his death in 1967. In 1900 he married Lettie Christensen in the Logan Temple. The couple had four children who survived into adulthood. The images document the town of Newton, Utah and the surrounding area or are related to the Joseph Jeppe Larsen and the Larsen family. The images were collected or taken by J. J. Larsen and his brother Hyrum. Included in the collection are images of agriculture, irrigation, the Newton Cooperative Store, social and church activites, homes, schools, the Wheelon coffer dam on the Bear River, J.J. Larsen and the Larsen family, the 1897 ACU graduating class, Cache Junction, and the Newton tithing house. Use of the Collection

Donated by Reed Bartlet and Ruby Woodward (granddaughter of Joseph J. Larsen). Processing Note :The descriptions in quotes probably came from J.J. Larsen and were written on the original negative sleeves. Many of the images were used in the book The History of Newton and Cache Junction the Churches, Schools, People 1867-2006.
