Overview of the Collection
Biographical NoteThe George Thatcher Corp. owned and started many businesses in Logan. The brothers George Washington and Brigham Guy Thatcher, in partnership with William Spicker operated the Consolidated Theatre Co. (built the Lyric, Capitol, and Main). The Thatcher family owned the Thatcher Banking Co. (rooms were rented in this building) and the Thatcher Music Co. The C.C. Anderson and Bon Marche stores were operated by them also. Content DescriptionThe collection was sorted into the following record groups and repaired when necessary. The loose papers were separated into: Thatcher family and business papers (includes legal documents concerning estates and the C.C. Anderson and Bon Marche stores); and business papers concerning the Consolidated Theatres and the Thatcher Music Co. All the bills paid were sorted, in consecutive order, from 1950 to 1986, followed by The Unemployment Compensation Fund and Tax forms (1970-1981), along with misc. bills (1938-1971) and deposit books (1944-1971). The ledgers for the G. Thatcher Corp., the Theatres, and the Thatcher Music Co. are at the end of the collection. Three oversized folders of business paper can be found in the last box, along with two maps. A poster of an attraction at the Capitol Theatre has been mounted on museum board and placed into the broadside collection. The ledgers from the Lyric and Capitol Theatres are particularly interesting since they are a record of the movies and plays that came through Logan during the 1920s and 1930s. The ledgers of the Thatcher Music Co. show what musical instruments were available in the Logan - Montpelier area. Ledger No. 10 (Thatcher Music Co.) contains interesting business and family history on pages 15-22. Other papers in the collection are concerned with Thatcher family member and their legal matters.
