Biographical Note
Maxwell D. Cohn was born on December 10, 1881, in Malad, Idaho. Maxwell was the son of
Meyers and Sarah Gumpert Cohn, both of German origin, who migrated to the United States
in their late teenage years. Records show that Maxwell attended Utah Agricultural
College in 1901 and 1902 under the classification of Special Student. Cohn loved to hunt
and fish and this is reflected in the many outdoor photographs of the collection.
Maxwell took care of the family ranch in Idaho and was involved with the Idaho
Cattlemen's Association (serving as president between 1935 and 1940) and the National
Cattlemen's Association. After selling the ranch, he became superintendent of the Lava
Hot Springs resort. He died, having never married, on September 5, 1965, in Salt Lake
City, Utah.
Content Description
The Maxwell D. Cohn collection consists mainly of photographs Cohn took while he was
attending the Agricultural College of Utah in Logan, Utah between 1901 and 1902. These
images (some of which were probably not taken by him) are excellent early illustrations
of class-room scenes, cadet activities, scenic shots, and social events at the ACU. Most
of the other photographs date from 1895 to 1905 and are of friends and relatives, Logan
Canyon, the Hercules Power Company, Salt Lake City, and outdoor scenes from his
family’s ranch near Arimo, Idaho.
Researcher note: Some of the photographs have faded but most are in good condition.
Photographs 3:01:01-3:09:04 are located in box 2 (there is no box 3).
