Biographical Note
Samuel E. Clark was born April 29, 1883, in St. Charles, Idaho. Clark attended the Chicago School of Music and later graduated from New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Clark was a prominent musician for both the community and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, teaching and playing piano and pipe organ as well as instructing in music theory. Clark was employed with the Thatcher Music Company (under George W. Thatcher) and taught publicly for Utah State Agricultural College, the McCune School of Music, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Music Institute Department, and also gave private lessons. Content Description
This collection contains information about Samuel E. Clark's private piano and organ lessons, his teachings at Utah State Agricultural College and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Church Music Institute Department, and other music endeavors. The collection consists of both ledgers and loose papers. The ledgers date from 1911 to 1953 and include music programs from recitals Clark performed or conducted, newspaper reviews for his recitals, newspaper articles, correspondence, financial records, and notes from his music coursework. The loose pages of the collection were originally inserted in the ledgers but were removed and placed in folders 1 through 16, where they are labeled to correspond with certain ledgers. Folders 17 through 19 do not correspond with a ledger. This collection is arranged in chronological order; however, the last five ledgers of the collection were not added to the collection until 2013 and are not included in the chronology of the first 23 ledgers. These additional volumes contain notes Samuel Clark took while attending school at the New England Conservatory of Music. Also added was a letter sent to Clark by friends from the Holland Furnace Company, congratulating him on his long and successful career in music.
