Summary: This collection contains diaries and family records of the early settlers in Smithfield, Utah. This collection would be useful to any person interested in the early history of Smithfield. It would also be useful to persons interested in the records of genealogy of a particular family in Smithfield. The collection is arranged alphabetically and is very easily accessible by anyone.

Historical Note

In 1859 Brigham Young sent Robert Thornley and his cousin north to found a settlement on Summit Creek. They named their new community Summit, but the name was soon changed to Smithfield in honor of John Glover Smith, the town's first LDS Bishop. Smithfield was officially incorporated by the territorial legislature in 1868. The materials in this collection originate from settlers residing in Smithfield during these formative years and subsequent decades.

Content Description

This six-box collection consists of typescripts and photocopies of diaries, family records, biographical sketches, and oral history interviews concerning the early settlers in Smithfield, Utah. The materials in this collection were collected and compiled by Lawrence Cantwell, a former resident of Smithfield. The diaries, family records, and biographical sketches, have been organized alphabetically by the last name of the individual. The oral history interviews conducted by Lawrence Cantwell between 1970 and 1989 have been placed at the end of the collection and arranged alphabetically by the interviewee's late name.
