Historical Note
The Folklore in the News Collection contains ephemeral items (many newspaper articles)
that deal with Utah and surrounding areas, including folk customs, beliefs, folk groups,
material culture, legends, etc. The Fife Folklore Archives faculty and staff have
continued the collection with folklore items from a variety of ephemeral sources,
including newspapers, magazines, brochures, etc.
Content Description
The materials in the Folklore in the News Collection include newspaper clippings,
brochures, programs, and other ephemeral folklore items (1973 to present). All materials
are housed in acid-free archival boxes and divided into separate folders by genre, with
each item noted therein and stored in USU Special Collections and Archives.
Use of the Collection
Restrictions on Access : Restrictions
Open to public research. To access the collection a patron must have the following
information: collection number, series number, sub-series number, if applicable, box
number and folder number (or image number).
Restrictions on Use : Copyright
It is the responsibility of the user to obtain permission to publish from the owner of
the copyright (the institution, the creator of the record, the author or his/her
transferees, heirs, legates, or literary executors). The user agrees to indemnify and
hold harmless the Utah State University Libraries, its officers, employees, and agents
from and against all claims made by any person asserting that he or she is an owner of
copyright.

Acquisition Information :
The materials in the Folklore in the News Collection date from approximately 1973. Along
with Austin and Alta Fife, Professor William A. Wilson and Barbara [Garrett Walker] Lloyd noted
folklore items in the news and began to collect these items of interest. From that time
forward the Randy Williams and others have collected folklore items of interest from a
variety of sources, including newspaper, magazine, brochure, etc.
